“Correction Codes”

- shorthand for marking

-awk- awkward – not natural sounding English, possibly a translation, need more exposure to authentic English

NOTE: It is important to be able to express your thoughts precisely and clearly.

 

-cap capitalization

 

-cs comma splice- join two sentences with a comma XXX ,

Jay likes ice cream, Mary likes cake. XXX

EASY SOLUTION Jay likes ice cream, but Mary likes cake.

 

-frag- fragment- not a complete sentence

If you want to go to the party. frag ½ sentence

-prep prepositions – all idiomatic, not strong rules

When do you say ‘in’? When do you say ‘on’?

If you are having trouble with prepositions, you need more exposure to English.

-tr   I am tired. I will go to the party.

FIX I am tired. However, I will go to the party. flows, meaning is clearer, your intention is clearer

I am tired; nevertheless, I will go to the party.

 

vt- verb tense !! past, present, future

simple, progressive ‘ing’, perfect

You have to practice and review

FOCUS ON THESE: simple present, simple past, simple future, present progressive (continuous), past progressive, future progressive, present perfect, past perfect, future perfect, present perfect progressive, past perfect progressive, future perfect progressive

 

 

 

*present progressive- She is moving the table.

*present perfect- May has lived in Vancouver for five months.

*past perfect – use simple past instead

May had lived lived in Japan for three years.

Joe will have finished his work by 9pm.

Joe will finish his work by 9pm.

* present perfect progressive

May has been living in Vancouver for five years.

 

 

They had been working in Paris before 2007. past perfect progressive

They were working in Paris before 2007. past progressive

I was living in Edomonton before I came to Vancouver.

I had been living in Edmonton before I came to Vancouver. TOO FANCY

 

-vf  verb form

-wf -vocabulary, word forms, building vocabulary

incident – unfortunate thing that happens, bad thing that happens

There was an incident in class today. Two students got into a fight.

 

SVV John had attended and prayed semiannual per year.

EDITS John attended church and prayed semiannually.

Substitute simple past, no past perfect

John attended church and prayed twice per year.

 

These simple sentences are the foundations of all of our writing. I want you to feel comfortable with these ideas:
