SIMPLE
COMPOUND
COMPLEX
COMPOUND COMPLEX
These are the foundations of writing for me, for you, for
everybody.
We will continue to work on this for the next two weeks.
I’m all about strong sentences.
I use these sentences in my writing and in my editting business.
I use these sentences as a foundation for everything I write.
Let’s put this into practice.
#1 best to improve and practice sentence writing is sentence
combining.
Sentence writing- William Strong
He has lots of books out. They tend to be college level and
higher.
It is possible to find beginner level and intermediate
level.
EF6 -somewhere between upper intermediate and advanced.
sentence combining exercises – some very challenging, some much
easier
-some are hard for me to do
-wide range of levels- we will start mid level, we can stay
easy or get as hard as you want
You can find books on sentence combining. You may have to dig
for them.
I got a bunch from a UBC professor when he retired.
Sentence combining- take several short sentences and combine
to make one dense concise sentence.
dense- a lot of meaning
concise- as short as possible
Example sentence combining exercise:
Dad at Home

Find new information.
He has driven for twenty years.
He is taking a year off.
He will be with Jackie.
Jackie's dad is a truck driver
has driven for twenty years
is taking a year off
will be with Jackie
Combine these elements into one dense
concise sentence.
What kind of sentence should you choose:
simple, compound, complex, compound complex.
This is gut reaction, a feeling.
Lot of information. simple compound,
complex
Jackie's dad is a truck driver who has
driven for twenty years; he is taking a year off and will be with Jackie. compound

twenty years and
is taking a year off to be with Jackie.
