Good morning, everybody.
We will get started at 11:00.
Today’s agenda:
1. Review descriptive paragraph
2. Verb tense homework
I forgot to post the verb tense homework on the blog. Only two people noticed. That tells me that nobody checked their homework.
I posted it yesterday afternoon after I got home from camping.
Descriptive paragraph
- 100-150 words
- good sentences -simple, compound, complex
- begin with a topic sentence
- descriptive sentences that talk about what is in the picture
- end with a concluding sentence
Some points for improvement:
- paragraph format – indent first word
- not individual sentences, a block of writing
- doublespace
There is a wonderful picture that has light pink color around the mountain and the sky.
paragraph content -top to bottom, bottom to top, side to side
- describe what you see- colour, shape,
object
- avoid first person, no “I”
Comment – Good first draft.
draft, copy – writing a paper, first draft, second draft, third draft, final draft
In class, you only have time to write a decent first draft. You don’t have time to rewrite the first draft into a second or third draft.
However, drafting is essential to writing. You have to write multiple draft before the writing is any good.
My process for writing–
1. Research and planning
2. Write first draft – not good quality
3. Revise and edit – fix grammar, fixing vt, vf, punc
reorganize your ideas, develop your description, revise vocabulary
4. Write second draft
5. Revise and edit
6. Write third draft
7. Revise and edit
8. Write fourth draft
9. Revise and edit
10. Write final draft.
In university, I would easily write five or six drafts of a paper before submitting it. You have to do that to make it good quality.
For any letter that I have to write, I write multiple drafts before submitting it. I want it to be as good as I can get it.
If you want to be a good writer, writing multiple drafts is essential.
I have a small business in which I proofread and edit papers for university students, usually nurses who are doing the graduate degrees.
My advice is to always get some other eyes on your writing (not for a test).
Any questions about the paragraph?
We will write another paragraph this week. This paragraph will be a process paragraph- teaching or explaining how to do something.
2 weeks left –2 tests and 2 quizzes left, should be enough
No big final test.
Would you like a big final exam? 3 hours!!
No. Just makes us stressed out.
