Today’s agenda:

1. Doing our own work in order to learn.

This level is about the last level where a teacher will teach you about sentences.

2. Correction codes

3. HW Choose a couple example sentences from your Test#1.

Share them tomorrow on the chat. It will be anonymous, so you don’t have to feel shy.

Tomorrow: We will start on simple sentences

Language is social. The best and probable only way to learn a language well is to learn it in social settings: friends, community, etc.

If you try to learn English in isolation, relying on technology, it often does not work well.

Listen to Hyejin. She is wise.

A translator is not your friend. It is a crutch.

Let’s not be dependent on technology.

When I was learning Japanese, I took Japanese classes.

Mostly, I hung out with Japanese friends. I played pool. I played sports.

I drank beer. We told jokes.

FREE ADVICE #1: If you want to learn a new language, get a boyfriend or girlfriend who speaks that language. Guaranteed, you will speak pretty well within a year.

Almost always, people who are good speakers have learned it socially. You can’t learn to speak and listen by studying grammar.

Covid19 makes this almost impossible right now.

Social groups to meet with – Meetup.com

hiking, cycling

Be careful! If a strange man says, “Let’s meet under the Knight Street Bridge”, don’t go.

Watching movies with subtitles is fun and feels good; however, it is passive learning.  Passive learning is not very effective.

e.g. I can watch people play tennis, but it won’t make me a better tennis player. If I want to learn to play tennis, I have to get a racquet and get on the tennis court and start running around trying to hit tennis balls.

That is active learning.

Correction Codes

CS – comma splice

I want to meet my friends again, also I  want to visit my home country.XXX

, comma is not strong enough

FIX:

I want to meet my friends again. Also, I want to visit my home country. two simple sentences

I want to meet my friends again; also, I want to visit my home country.

compound sentence

Do you have any examples of comma splices from your paragraph from yesterday? Write them in the chat and we can share them.

prep – around 75 in English, 61?, a lot!, confusing!!,

small words but big effect

MY OPINION- prepositions are the heart of English

If you know your prepositions, you know English.

STUDENT EXAMPLE:

1. You can`t travel, so people can`t see their families or they got separated from their loved one. AWK PRON, divide into sentences

People can`t travel, so they can`t see their families. They got are/feel separated from their loved ones.

NICE SENTENCES – compound, simple

FREE ADVICE#2: Avoid very long sentences. At our level of English, it is easy to lose control of long sentences.

Stick to shorter, clearer sentences.

SIMPLE, COMPOUND, COMPLEX – that’s what we want right now
