Sentence combining

sentence types:
simple
compound
complex

You have to be able to write these.
Fundamental skills for us

sentence combining – put this knowledge and skills into practice
Two choices besides Simple sentences:
(often Simple sentences are not possible when conveying a lot of dense information)

1. coordination – co together, cooperate, coworker
two things on the same level
coordinate clauses – two clauses on the same level of importance
Compound sentences AAAA , SOBA CCCC.
AAAA; TRANS, CCCC.

2. subordination – sub, lower, subway, substitute
two things not on the same level
subordinated clauses – adverb, adjective, and noun clauses
Complex sentences
We can either coordinate information or subordinate information.
We have to be conscious about this. When we are writing, we have to decide what kind of sentence we want to write: simple, compound, complex.
If you don’t decide what kind of sentence you want to write, your sentence may turn out to be a mess.

Sentence combining allows us opportunity to practice this.

Your examples of #2 from Homework – Type your answer in Chat, and tell us what kind of sentence you wrote: simple, compound, complex.

1. The object that appears rounded has a diameter that measures about 1/8 inch. complex -adj cl
2. The object which has many flat sides and a diameter that measures about 1/8 inch appears rounded. complex-adj cl

#5 The top of the object is made of rubber. kernel
The top of the object has an aluminum band around it.
The bottom of the object comes to a sharp point.

2. Find new information in the other sentences. Avoid repetition
3. Decide what kind of sentence to we want to write.

The top of the object is made of rubber. kernel
has an aluminum band around it.
The bottom comes to a sharp point.

Compound
The top of the object is made of rubber and has an aluminum band around it, and the bottom comes to a sharp point.

Your examples:
1. The top of the object is made of rubber and has an aluminum band around it, but the bottom comes to a sharp point. Compound
2. The top of the object which is made of rubber has an aluminum band around it; however, the bottom of the object comes to a sharp point. compound complex

This is not easy, but we will continue to get better.
We have work to do.

gets. kernel
The longer you use the object, the duller it
gets.

*** Review of Sentences
** Simple – one part, one clause
     SV

** Compound – two simple sentences together,   ,SOBA
      SV SV

** Complex
- adverb clause - because if when
- adjective clauses – who that which
- noun clauses – say, think, feel, believe, know
- that why how

The sentence types are essential. You have to know how to write them.

We can put all of this sentence work into practice using sentence combining.

In sentence combining, we take several short sentences and combine them into one longer, denser sentence.
denser sentence -more information in fewer words, dense
Easy example.
Joe has a ball.
The ball is red.
The ball is plastic.

Combine these:
Joe has a ball, and the ball is red, and the ball is plastic. Poor quality writing. unnecessary repetition

Joe has a ball. Kernel
The ball is red. new information
The ball is plastic. new information

Process:
1. Find the kernel, the centre, the first sentence.
2. Look for new information in the following sentences.

Joe has a ball.
red
plastic

3. Decide what kind of sentence do we want to write: simple, compound, complex

Simple: Joe has a red plastic ball.
Compound: Joe has a plastic ball, and it is red.
Complex: Joe has a plastic ball which is red. adj cl

Sentence variety – writing a variety of simple, compound, and complex sentences.

Ex. 1 Try Out Your Skills.

1. You should dress warmly. kernel
It is getting very cold. all new information, no repetition

COMPLEX You should dress warmly because it is
getting very cold.
COMPOUND You should dress warmly.
It is getting very cold.
You should dress warmly, and it is getting very cold. NOT BAD
Reverse the sentences:
It is getting very cold, so you should dress warmly.

This work will make us better writers.
