EF5/6 READ THIS FOR HOMEWORK- Paragraph Structure and Format

Paragraph Format
When you write a paragraph, you must follow certain rules about format.  Format means how the paragraph looks on a page.  Here are some key points about format to remember when writing a paragraph:
1.    Double-space.  Most teachers expect pass-in writing to be double-spaced.  This allows the teacher to make comments about your writing and offer corrections.  It also make your writing easier to read.
2.    Write in pen, not pencil.  Black or blue ink is best.  Leave the green, pink and silver pens at home.
3.    Indent.  Start your first sentence of each paragraph about two cm in from the margin.  If you are using computer, use the TAB key.
4.    Respect the margins.  Keep your writing between the margins.
5.    Don’t start each new sentence on a new line.
6.    Don’t use numbering or bullet points.
7.    Make sure each sentence is a real sentence.

Paragraph Writing

The purpose of a paragraph is to express one point, idea or opinion. This main idea is expressed through three sections of a paragraph:
1.    Begin your paragraph with a topic sentence.  A topic sentence states the topic of the paragraph and what you want to say about it.  A topic sentence must be a clearly-written sentence.
2.    Develop your topic sentence with supporting sentences.  The supporting sentences explain in detail what you said in your topic sentence.  Supporting sentences can give opinions, descriptions, facts, and explanations.
3.    End your paragraph with a concluding sentence which restates your topic sentence in different words.  Your concluding sentence reinforces your paragraph by repeating the topic and what you wanted to say about it.

This is the basic model for a basic well-constructed paragraph.
In this class, we will practice four types of paragraphs: descriptive, narrative, process, and persuasive.
