Exercise #1

Change active voice to passive voice in the following sentences.

1.    May drank a glass of milk. ACTIVE VOICE simple past verb tense

PASSIVE VOICE

A glass of milk was drunk by May.

Passive voice- more complicated, easy to make mistakes

-don’t know who did the action

-focus on the object

-avoid responsibilty

 

2.    Junko cleaned the kitchen.

The kitchen was cleaned by Junko. simple past

The kitchen has already been cleaned already. present perfect

already – finished

I already did EF3.

 

Commas are very personal things- some people use a lot of commas;other people don’t.

There are some basic rules for commas. There is authentic usage- what do other good writers do.

e.g. Please close the door.

Close the door, please.

Please, close the door. – sounds a bit impatient

These cookies were baked by Mark.

ways of cooking- bake, boil, toast, scramble, fry, roast, broil, barbecue, steam, simmer, stew, burn, char, smoke

4.    I am teaching you about English. ACTIVE

Your English is being taught by me. PASSIVE

The English is taught to me by him. PASSIVE VOICE

She taught me English. ACTIVE VOICE simple

 

Passive voice sounds very indirect. Sounds weak.

 

5.    He is riding a horse. ACTIVE VOICE

The horse is being ridden by him. PASSIVE VOICE

 

We know about it. You can choose to use it when it seems appropriate.

 

Write some passive and active sentences from your imagination.

6.    throw

The ball was thrown to me in the park.

The retirement party was thrown in a restaurant downtown.

through(prep)

A brick was thrown through the window.

Somebody threw a brick through the window. ACTIVE

 

The junk was thrown away by me.

PHRASAL VERB through(verb) away(prep)

 

pass(v) – hand to hand

throw(v)- through the air

 

7.    buy

The ball was bought last week.

These tennis balls were bought last week.

Mai bought these tennis balls last week. ACTIVE VOICE

 

The new Skytrain cars were bought from a German manufacturer.

The old Skytrain cars are being sold for pennies.

store(v) storage(n)- keeping old things in place

Her grandmother’s old plates are/were stored in boxes in her attic.

store(n)- retail business

She runs a boutique dress shop. boutique- fancy, fashionable, designer

He runs a boutique guitar store.

shop(n,v) She shops in a shop.

shop- sounds like a little store, small

 

They go to the grocery store.

attic- top of the house or building

 

8.    wear

present tense- A tie is worn with a collared shirt.

past tense- Last week, poppies were worn to commemorate Remembrance Day.

future tense- Colourful dresses will be worn by Indian women for the wedding.

 

He always wears a smile. She usually wears a frown.

Parents tell kids: Turn that frown upside down.

 

9.    bring

Your dictionary should be brought to the class everyday.

Good news was brought by him. PASSIVE

He brought good news. ACTIVE

Have you brought your hiking boots? ACTIVE

She put her car up for sale. She put it on Marketplace, ebay, and Craigslist.

**As a good writer, you can decide how you want to say/write things.

 

accident(n)- something gets damaged, somebody gets hurt

incident(n)- something awkward happened, uncomfortable, i.e. argument, raised voices

 

There was an incident in class today. Two students got into an argument.

There was a car accident on Highway 1.

There was a fatal car accident on the Sea-to-Sky.

Sea-to-Sky – the highway from Van to Whistler

 

fatal(adj) – causing death

 

IDIOM black ice- sections of frozen water on the road, not visible

IDIOM fender bender- a minor car accident, dented bumpers
