Write a simple sentence for each.

You have studied English since 2005. present perfect

present perfect – started in the past, keeps going until now

I have lived in Vancouver since 1989.

Mei has done yoga since last November.

Sentence types:

SIMPLE

COMPOUND

COMPLEX

 

These are the sentence types that you need to be successful in an English high school or college, job, and life in Vancouver.

You can use all of the sentences types that we are learning in highschool, college, life, work, etc.

 

SIMPLE SV

It is an overcast day.    overcast=cloudy, no sun

It will rain tomorrow.

 

 

COMPOUND – join these simple sentences together

 

It is an overcast day.  JOIN  It will rain tomorrow.

 

 

JOIN- , SOBA  , so   , or   , but   , and

 

Most teacher teach FANBOYS. I teach SOBA.

FANBOYS- for and nor but or yet so

 

English speakers use SOBA everyday, all day long!

SOBA – so or but and

 

e.g. It is an overcast day, and it will rain tomorrow. COMPOUND

 

I like cats. She likes dogs.

I like cats, and she likes dogs.

I like cats, but she likes dogs.

SOBA  , so   , or   , but   , and

so – give a reason

or - choice

but – shows difference

and – adding something

 

HIGHER LEVEL WAYS TO MAKE A COMPOUND SENTENCE:

e.g.    It is a sunny day; also, it will rain tomorrow.

It is a sunny day; however, it will rain tomorrow.

I teach semicolons in EF56.  In EF34, I stick to SOBA.

Examples of compound sentences with SOBA:

Mei had insomnia last night, so she is very tired today.

insomnia – can’t sleep

You can have tea, or you can have coffee. COMPOUND

You can have tea or coffee. SIMPLE

You can study at UBC, or you can go to Langara.

You can stay in Canada, or you can go back to your home country.

Jun wants to get a cat, but Taka does not like cats.

Mei wants to go to the party, but she is working tonight.

Jean speaks French, and Maria speaks French, too.

Jean and Maria speak French. SIMPLE

The kids played in the park, and then they had a picnic.

Jun and her sister had an argument, and now they are not speaking to each other.

 

Do you see the difference between simple and compound sentences?

We will be learning this for the next couple of days.

 

 

 

 

Compound Sentence Exercises for homework

 

Directions: Add a clause to each simple sentence to create a compound sentence. Use SOBA. You don’t have to do them all- choose a bunch.

Email them to me by tomorrow morning. We will share them tomorrow.
