EF2/3 Modal practice sentences

1. drive
You can drive well.
You should drive safely.
She can't drive at night.
You shouldn't drive your car in the snow.
You must not drive when you are drinking.

2. eat
She should eat better.
The little girl can eat five cookies.
He used to eat Indian food in India.
She must not eat seafood because she is allergic.
because she has allergies.
Would you like to eat something sweet?

3. walk
You should walk 20 minutes everyday.
We might walk home after school if it isn't raining.
The old man can't walk without a cane.

4. understand
I can't understand your opinion.
Can you understand the teacher/ story/ math/ Chinese?
I can help you understand your homework.
At first, you should try to understand what I'm saying. Then we can talk.

5. return
Could you return the book to me today?
You can't return milk to the supermarket.
You should return to your home to find your key.
I am going to return to Japan some day.
May I return your black dress tomorrow?

6. I can't go to your party.
He should go to Hawaii for a vacation because he is burnt out.
You can't go in there!
She ought to go to the hospital.
She ought to to go to the hospital.

She was supposed to to go to the wedding, but she got into a fight with the bride.

Two-word and three-word modals are trickier.
One- word modals are easier.

7. rent
I must pay my rent today.
You have got to rent a big house for your family.
She must rent a big house for her ten children.

8. watch
I will watch TV after I eat.
Children shouldn't watch too much TV.
You must watch what you eat.
You should watch out for kids when you are driving.
