Today’s agenda:

·      Review Quiz#2 - compound sentences

·      Review simple and compound sentences

·      Begin complex sentences

We are doing a review of the three types of sentences.

 

 

Quiz #2

Create a compound sentence for each.

 

e.g. and cat

         The cat is asleep, and the dog is awake.

         Cats like milk, and I do, too.

Our goal is to be able to write these two styles of sentences effortlessly.

Individual self-guided practice is critical.

You could practice English every day if you want to get good.

Only capitalize proper nouns, names, the first letter of a sentence, and “I”.

I wanted to buy a watch today, but the store was closed.

I want to buy a watch tomorrow, but the store will be closed.

 

close – (adj) nearby “I live close to the park.”

closed – (adj) not open “The border between India and Pakistan is closed every night.”

I missed my/the bus, so I arrived at work late.

 

12.                 I am eating sandwich, and my daughter is eating pizza

I am eating a sandwich, and my daughter is eating pizza.

 

13.                 You can use/take Sky train, or you can use/take the bus.

14.                 My sister like to eat paella, and eat pizza too. XXX

My sister likes to eat paella, and she eats pizza, too.

This is a really good start.

Don’t forget this.

Practice so you won’t forget it. You will have to practice for a long time before it is deep in your mind.

Practice is until it is so boring and routine that you do it without even having to think about it.

Common practice mistake: Practice until they get it right. Then stop.

You have to practice every day until simple an compound sentences are routine and easy and effortless for you.

Then you will really know it.

 

 

 

 

 

 

REVIEW

 

Simple Sentence

A simple sentence is one independent clause that has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. Notice that there are some important requirements for a simple sentence:

1. Must have a subject and a verb.

2. Must express a complete thought.

3. Must only have one clause.

 

Examples of Simple Sentence:

1. Joe went to the store.

2. Sarah and Jessie are going swimming.

3. The frog jumped and landed in the pond.

4. Keep your eyes open for bargains.

5. The pizza smells delicious.

6. There is a fly in the car with us.

7. Look on top of the refrigerator for the key.

8. The printer is out of paper.

9. Will you help me with the math homework?

10. The music is too loud.

Add something new to each sentence to make a compound sentence.

e.g.

1.       Joe went to the store.

Joe went to the store, and he bought some milk.
