Optional replacement quiz/test **
A few people have asked me about rewriting
quizzes or tests. Maybe they had a bad quiz or missed a quiz or test.
In my classes, I offer an optional replacement
quiz or test for anyone who would like to do one.
Next week, you will have an opportunity to
replace one of the quizzes or tests that you wrote.
Again, this is optional. You don’t have to do
it if you don’t want to.
So far we have done three quizzes:

You have your marks for those.
You may have one quiz that you were not
satisfied with.
One is one. Not two, not three. 1=1
You choose which one you want to replace.
You will do the replacement quiz during
regular class time, as usual. It will be Thursday, August 1st. We will do it
the last 50 minutes of class.
The replacement quiz will be a new quiz. The
replacement quiz will be a mix of all sentence styles.
e.g. If you want to replace your Quiz #3 the adverb
clause quiz, the replacement quiz will not just be on adverb clauses; it will
be on all of the sentence styles.The replacement quiz will be six sentences, as
usual- mix of simple, compound, complex: 1 simple, 2 compound, 3 complex OR 2
simple, 2 compound, 2 complex, for
example.
Your old mark will be replaced with the new
mark. It will not be the higher of the two marks.

Think carefully about if you would like to
replace one of your quiz or test marks.
ADVICE:
If you have pretty good marks, just leave
them. Don’t bother with the replacement quiz or test.
On the other hand, if you have a really low
mark somewhere, it would be worth doing the replacement quiz or test.
REMINDER: Quizzes are worth just under 30% of
your final mark.
Tests are worth juat under 60%.
Spoken is worth about 25%.
Think about which quiz or test you want to replace,
if any. You can tell me next Thursday when we do the replacement quiz or test.
If you choose to not do the replacement quiz or
test, than you can leave early on Thursday.
**MIDTERM RECOMMENDATIONS**
Midterm Recommendations- this week
We are past the halfway point in the term. We have only one and a
half weeks left.
I will give midterm recommendations to you this week. The midterm
recommendation is a snapshot or picture of how you are doing at this moment,
based on your average so far.
Registration for September courses will begin Monday, July 29th.
You will be able to register via the South Hill website as usual. You will be
emailed a link to follow in order to register. I will show the class how to
register. I will demonstrate what to do.
In order to register, you need a recommendation from your teacher,
me. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week, I will give you a midterm
recommendation for which English class you should register for in September. If
you are not going to take a class in September, than you don’t need the rec.
On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, we will have a short chat at my
desk. We will talk about how things are going so far in this course and what
your next course should/could be. I will put your recommendation into a
spreadsheet for the advisors.
By ‘so far’, I mean we have almost finished four of five weeks.
“So far’ means ‘up to now’.
If you want a copy of my comments, you can take a picture of the
comments on your phone.
The interim recommendation will be based on the quizzes and tests you
have done so far this term. Also, I will give you a spoken mark out of 10 based
on how much speaking you do in class. Plus there are a few points for rewrites.
TRICKY PART
The minimum average for early registration is 65%.
The final pass mark at the end of course is 50%.
If you are between 50-64%, we can talk again next week. You can
reg later next week.
