GOLD MEDAL ANSWER

Mr. Wei from “I Confess” is clearly the better role model for his students in that he demonstrates how an adult can recognize a mistake, admit it, and change from it.  Mr. Wei’s strictness at the beginning of the story is somewhat artificial, as he is responding mainly to the jaded advice of older teachers.  Mr. Obi of “Dead Man’s Path”, on the other hand, is convinced of the correctness of his opinions.  Whereas Mr. Wei is in a position to change, Obi remains intransigent as the story develops.  When Mr. Wei realizes he has made an error with Wang Wei, he is shaken, so he goes to verify if he has been in the wrong, which he finds he has been.  Mr. Obi is unable to make such a self-realization and is arrogant in the face of the priest’s reasonable arguments to him regarding the path.  Finally, at the end of the story, Mr. Wei seeks to rectify the situation he has caused by confessing his error to his students.  His anger gone, he is humble and contrite, and somewhat the wiser.  Mr. Obi, on the other hand, is unable to make any similar concessions to the priest or the villagers due to his obstinacy, and he pays the high price of vanity by having his beautiful model school ruined by the vengeful villagers.  In the end. Mr. Wei is a role model of maturity and humility and probably wins his students’ affection whereas Mr. Obi’s scornfulness and imperiousness damages his once promising career.

Mr. Wei from “I Confess” is a better role model for students than Mr Obi from “Dead Man’s Path”.  Mr. Wei’s is not really as strict as he pretends to be.  On the other hand, Mr. Obi is not pretending to be so opinionated- he really is.  Therefore, Mr. Wei is willing to change his idea as the story progresses, but Obi is not.  When Mr. Wei finds out he is wrong, he changes his mind.  Mr. Obi never changes his mind despite what the priest tries to tell him.  Finally, at the end of the story, Mr. Wei solves the problem by confessing to his students.  Mr. Obi, on the other hand, is too stubborn to admit his error.  For these reasons, Mr. Wei is a better role model for his students than Mr. Obi.
