These are the verb tenses we have learned so far:

Simple present   Maris plays volleyball every Sunday afternoon.

Simple past         She played volleyball last week.

Simple future      She is going to play again next week.

Present progressive     She is playing right now.

 

New verb tense: past progressive

auxiliary verb + ‘ing’

 

Present progressive:

Mei is watching a movie right now.

Past progressive:

Mei is was watching a movie last night.

Mei was watching a movie last night.

 

EASIEST WAY TO SAY THIS- simple past

Mei watched a movie last night.

 

Why use past progressive?

** simple past and past progressive- little bit different usage

 

SIMPLE PAST- one event, finished

Mei watched a movie last night.

 

PAST PROGRESSIVE- event in the past, interrupted by something else

Mei was watching a movie last night when the electricity went out.

Mei was watching a movie last night, and her sister called.

 

 

 

 

 

 

EXAMPLES:

I was coming to school, and the bus stopped because of construction.

I came to school, and the bus stopped because of construction. XXX

I was coming to school at 8am. XXX

I came to school this morning at 8am.

 

 

My son and I had lunch in his classmate’s home at noon yesterday.

My son and I were having lunch in his classmate’s home at noon yesterday, and he broke a glass.

She was driving her car, and a dog ran in front of her.

SENTENCE STRUCTURE:

She saw her son running across the park.

I saw you walking down the sidewalk.

We heard her singing a song.

I was arriving early today. XXX ‘arrive’ doesn’t take up a span of time

IDIOM We made it home. We made it safe and sound. - We got home. We arrived home.

We made it to Calgary in 10 hours. distance travelled

She made it to UBC after two years at SHEC. She is a student there now. goal achieved

Her dog made it to 20.

My grandmother made it to 98.

My grandmother passed away at 98.

 

 

PAST PROGRESSIVE

There was an earthquake last Friday. Did you feel it?

Yes, I was studying at South Hill (when the earthquake happened).

Yes, I was talking to my neighbour in the backyard (when the earthquake happened).

No, I was taking a ferry, so I didn’t feel it.

I was talking to my friend when the earthquake happened.

 

Do you remember where you were when Covid began?

I was living in China at the time.

I was living in Vancouver when Covid broke out.

He was working in Malaysia, so he flew home to The Philippines.

 

Let’s write some sentences on our own using past progressive verb tenses:

I was sitting on the bus when a couple started to argue.

He was eating a sandwich, and he found a piece of fingernail/hair in it.

She was eating a cake, and she found a ring.

A friend of mine was eating a piece of his birthday cake, and he found a piece of paper with a name and phone number on it.

 

I was driving my car, and I remembered that I forgot my lunch.

I was driving, and I realized that I forgot to lock the door.

 

The teacher was talking/speaking, and I remembered something from my past  suddenly. It triggered my memory.

 

 

 

VOCAB trigger(v,n) causes negative emotion or memory to occur

Seeing that dog triggers my fear.

The movie triggered some deep emotion in me.

She gets/is triggered easily.

A man yelling triggers her anxiety.

 

People with PTSD are easily triggered by loud noises, for example.

 

The dog was triggered by the tall man.

 

It really bothers him when people put their feet on their seat.

 

Therapy can help with those negative emotions.

obsessive-compulsive disorder- OCD

obsessive, obsession- thoughts that you cannot control, can’t stop thinking about something, bothers you

 

compulsion- actions that you cannot control

repeated actions, compelled to repeat these actions

e.g. hand washing, touch doorknob or light switch

 

The mouse incident triggered a hand-washing compulsion.

 

If it bothers you, you can get help.
