Adjective Clauses – Exercises

 

Exercise A

Complete each adjective clause with 'who', 'that', or 'which'. Write your sentences on your own paper.

 

1. The cat that is sitting on the windowsill is very cute.

2. The book that/which I borrowed from the library is excellent.

3. The student who handed in the report late apologized sincerely.

 

Two forms of adjective clauses:

1.    The woman who lives next door is very kind. subject pronoun

2.    The woman who I was talking to is very kind. object pronoun

Object pronoun- choices

The woman whom I was talking to her is very kind. GRAMMAR BOOK

ADJ CL follows the NOUN that it is describing

 

6.    Jun bought a shirt. It is too small.

Jun bought a shirt that is too small.

The shirt that is too small was bought by Jun. OVERWRITTEN

The shirt that Jun bought is too small.

The shirt Jun bought is too small.

 

7.    I visited a city. It has a famous cathedral.

I visited a city which/that has a famous cathedral.

 

8.    The movie was interesting. We watched it last night.

The movie (that) we watched last night was interesting.

 

9.    He had an accident. It happened yesterday.

He had an accident that/which happened yesterday.

10.                       She completed the project. It surprised everyone.

She completed the architecture project that/which surprised everyone.

 

IDIOM This is how the other half live. – how rich people live

MODERN IDIOM the 5%- the richest people

 

IDIOM the muckamucks- the rich people

She is a muckamuck. She comes from old money.
