STRUCTURE OF A PARAGRAPH (what goes in it, the parts)

 

Grabber – 7 ways to choose from

-short!- ~ one sentence

1.    question

2.    anecdote

3.    fact/statistic

4.    history

5.    quotation

6.    funnel- general statement, gets specific

7.    idiom

Makes your paragraph more inviting to read.

 

Topic sentence – relates directly to the topic

- gives topic, gives controlling idea (your take on the topic, your specific approach)

          PRO TIP: Borrow words from the question, or use synonyms.

                               That will ensure your paragraph is on topic.

 

TOPIC: Pets

TS: Of all the animals in the world, dogs make the best pets.

 

TOPIC: The benefits of music.

TS: Music therapy is beneficial for seniors in several ways.

TS: I like music. kind of boring

TS: Music is good. vague, broad, no focus

 

Supporting sentences- 3-4 points that support the TS

3-4 points – 3-4 sentences, maybe more

 

Concluding sentence- sticks close to the TS, Rewrite the Topic Sentence

Rewrite – paragraph, say the same things with different vocab.

 

TS: Of all the animals in the world, dogs make the best pets.

Use synomyms

CS: animal companion canine greatest best friend

From the above, it is clear that our canine companions are truly our best friends.

 

 

TS: Music therapy is beneficial for seniors in several ways.

CS:  treatment help useful helpful positive influence  advantage advantageous favourable elderly older retired aging

 

The elderly can benefit from the positive influence/help/advantages of music-based treatment/ music in their lives.

thesaurus – gives lots of synonyms and antonyms

Helps to give you more words.

Excellent for building your depth of vocabulary.

Exceptional for enhancing the extent of your phraseology.
