Causative Verbs

 

Causative verbs make other verbs act.  They cause actions to occur.

 

Both of the previous sentences contained causative verbs.

 

cause and affect

The most frequently used causative verbs are as follows:

 

help, tell, ask, allow, invite, motivate, encourage, get, convince, persuade, hire, assist, permit, force, require

 

Other ones are let and make.

 

Which of these causative do you know already?

 

Examples:

ask

Mei asked her sister to pick up her kids at school.

I ask my kids to clean up their toys.

 

 

help

My parents help me to buy a car.

invite

We will invite out friends to come to my party.

We will invite out friends to my party. not causative

 

help

I help my sister to do homework.

I help my sister to do homework because she is having trouble with biology.

encourage

I encourage my sister to study harder.

I will encourage my sister to study harder when she gets older.

 

 

motivate

I motivate myself to keep going even though life is tough sometimes.

You can fire someone with cause.

with cause- for a good reason

 

laid off- lose your job, not your fault, e.g. economic problems, eligible for EI- employment insurance

 

require

You are required to have Eng12, Chem12 and Math12 to get into BCIT. passive voice

This job requires you to have a driver's license. active voice

 

Getting a job in Canada requires you to have a work permit, PR, or citizenship.

PR- permanent resident

 

motivate

She motivated herself to learn Spanish.

 

 

 

The grammar is as follows:

SUBJECT + causative verb + OBJECT + infinitive.

I told my daughter to put the dishes away.

The dog forced me to give him treat.
