“Prescribed Learning Outcomes”

These are the skills that you must learn in order to pass your class.

English Foundations 1, English Foundations 2, Speaking & Listening ½

 

Hand out the “Prescribed Learning Outcomes” for each class.

 

EF1&2

ORAL LANGUAGE- speaking, talking

A1 “engage in informal conversations” – talk to people, two or more people talking together

 

WRITING AND REPRESENTATION- writing sentences

C1 “communicate meaning by using conventions of writing”

-         uppercase and lowercase letters, Capital letters, small letters

-         spacing between letters and words

-         end punctuation  . period, fullstop   ?question mark

C3 “minimum of 50 high-frequency words” most common vocab in English

**I will give you 100 verbs, 100 nouns, 100 adjectives

 

Don’t worry about the difficult vocabulary.

“Self-Assessment Reflection”

How do you feel about your progress in the class?

Every Friday, we will fill out our “Self-Assessment Reflection”

 

Today, we will do Week 1.

When you finish, please pass it in to me.

Work on “Vocabulary Exercises 1”

We will take turns reading them out loud.

1.    write

2.    donate(verb)- give for free

3.    clean(verb)-

set(verb)- set the table- put down plates, spoons, forks, knives, chopsticks, napkins

First we clean the table. Then we set the table. Then we eat. Then we put the dishes in the sink or dishwasher. Then we wash the dishes.

4.    entertain(verb)- tell funny stories, sing songs, put on a show

5.    pay attention(verb)- focus, listen, turn your mind to a job

6.    watched(verb)- see with your eyes, saw

She often watches TV/movies/videos in English with subtitles.

VOCAB subtitles- the words are written out on the screen

7.    remove(verb)- take off

She removed/took off her hat in the restaurant.

He put on his glasses.

8.    forgot(verb)- did not remember

Jun forgot his sister’s birthday.

Mei forgot to turn off her laptop.

9.    cry(verb)- weep, tears coming out from your eyes

She looked like she was crying when she cut up an onion.

10.                       opened(verb) – unwrapped, unboxed, not closed

A necklace is jewellery for your neck. It can gold or silver. It might have a diamond or pearl.

bracelet, bangle- for your wrist

anklet- for your ankle

earrings- for your ears

rings- for your fingers

“Making Introductions”

Get into small groups (4-5 people).

Talk about Warm-Up Questions.

Talk about Vocabulary Preview

Practice saying the dialogues.

 

Vocabulary Preview

1.    nephew- your sister’s or brother’s son, boy

2.    niece- your sister’s or brother’s daughter, girl

3.    roommate- a person you share an apartment with, not married

4.    colleague- a person who you work with at a job, coworker

5.    neighbour- a person you live next to, live beside

neighbourhood- the area of the city where you live

6.    fiancé- the person who you are going to marry, engaged

when you are married- wife, husband, partner

7.    classmate-  a person who learn in school with, colearner

8.    cousin- your uncle’s or aunt’s son or daughter

9.    mother-in-law – your husband’s or wife’s mother

I usually like my mother-in-law sometimes.

10.                       father-in-law –

brother-in-law

sister-in-law

son-in-law

daughter-in-law

in-law- related by marriage, not by blood

11.                       uncle- your mother’s or father’s brother

12.                       aunt - your mother’s or father’s sister

Some languages have special names for uncles and aunts.

In English, we only say ‘uncle’ and ‘aunt’.

I saw Uncle Joe. I didn’t see Uncle Fred.
