VOCAB agenda

Every day I will post an ‘agenda’

-‘agenda’- used for meetings, school, business or government

-the things that we are going to do, talk about, plan, schedule

-business world- business meetings always have agendas

-own a condo, townhouse- Strata council meetings, agenda

 

VOCAB strata – own an apartment, condominium, condo

Strata council meetings- homeowners meet to discuss the building

 

 agenda- list of items to talk about, schedule for the meeting or class

-helps to keep the meeting or class on track, organized

-lets everyone know what to expect, what is coming

IDIOM ‘stay on track’ ‘keep on track’ – stay organized, not get distracted, have a plan and follow it, stick to the plan

She wants to go to college, so she will stick to her plan of finishing her courses at SHEC.

She wants to go to university, so she is trying to stay on track finishing her courses at SHEC.

The little boy finds it hard to stay on track with his homework. He is easily distracted.

VOCAB -euphemism-polite word instead of the more direct word

This math is hard/difficult. The math is challenging.

Business/education vocabulary - difficult, hard- EUPHEMISM -challenging

Euphemism(n) – pron you-fem-ism

He used a euphemism when his friend’s grandmother died.

die- pass away, pass

doctor- operation-surgery- procedure You will undergo a procedure.

**Parking**

Scan the QR code on the pink piece of paper.

Put it your licence plate.

Put it in your first name and last name.

Scan and enter once. Parking is good until August 31, 2025. You will be able to park in the SHEC parking lot until August 31, 2025.

Last name- family name, surname

Causes confusing when filling out forms and documents.

Chinese and Vietnamese is opposite.

*If you brought your car, sign up in the app asap so that you do not get a ticket. Your car will probably not get towed away. I have never a tow truck in the parking lot at SHEC. Plenty of people have gotten tickets.

Personal Digital Device Usage

Personal digital device- phone, tablet, laptop

 

“To foster a safe and focused learning environment for students, the use of personal digital devices, that distract from learning, such as cell phones, tablets and electronic devices, are restricted during school hours and on school property. Educators and school staff will continue to model digital citizenship in the classroom and avoid the use of personal digital devices for non-instructional purposes.”

Not allowed:

1.    Recording the class (audio or video)

2.    Translating apps (in real time)

 

Personal digital devices must be turned off or placed on silent mode before entering the classroom and remain silent during instructional time.  Personal digital devices are not permitted for use during class/instructional time unless an educator has given permission.

 

The use of personal devices is permitted under the following circumstances:

For educational purposes, as directed by the educator in the classroom.

For health and medical purposes as outlined in an Individual Education Plan or Student Safety Plan.

To support special or diverse educational needs, such as assistive technology related to Individual Education Plans or Student Support Plans.

The expectation is that students will follow the personal digital device policy and school guidelines.

This is mortly aimed at K-12 students, teenagers. Adults have this problem, too.

-Tiktok- short video clips, 5-10s, highly addictive

-Instagram

Be careful! These are highly addictive. They are designed to be time users/wasters. Somebody is making $ from your time and attention.

 

*** IMPORTANT ***

Cell phones or other electronic devices are not allowed during quizzes and test. They must be put away, out of sight. If it’s out visible on the table, the school policy is to give a 0 for the quiz or test. If you forget, then remember. Put it away in your pocket, in your bag.

It’s on the course handout. I will didtribute the course handout in a few minutes.

You do not have to make notes as we go because everything on the screen will go onto the blog. Neverthless, making notes during class is an excellent way to improve retention. The best students usually make notes during a class or lecture. They review their notes on their own afterward, within 24 hours. It refreshes the knowledge. It helps to make the new information permanent.

cognitive(adj)- Former resident Biden has some obvious cognitive decline.

My grandmother had a sharp physical decline when she broke her hip.

Difficult cognitive work can stave off dimentia. -good for our brain

Difficult cognitive work- puzzles, learning a new language, pingpong, chess, Go, new musical instrument, squash

Making your own notes in a class helps you to retain information.
