Paragraph Format

         

Paragraphs

-         collection of sentences (5-7 sentences on one topic)

-         about 80-100 words

-         types of writing:           narrative writing - tell a story

descriptive writing – describes something

 

**      Narrative writing – You tell a short personal story about something that happened to you.

e.g. What did you last Sunday? Write about a funny thing that happened when you were a kid.

 

**      Descriptive writing – describe something – use your five senses

five senses- sight, taste, smell, hearing, touch

senses – the ways that we connect with the outside world

e.g. Describe a mountain.  Describe your mother’s face.

 

 

Writing a paragraph

 

Topic sentence- introduces the idea of the paragraph

 

e.g.

Describe a mountain.

TOPIC SENTENCE         There is a beautiful mountain scene.

 

What did you last Sunday?

TOPIC SENTENCE         Last Sunday for me was a very busy day.

 

Do you like living in Canada?

TOPIC SENTENCE         I like living in Canada for three reasons.

 

 

Topic sentence is the first introduction sentence  to the paragraph.

SUPPORTING SENTENCES- gives the details, give the reasons,

TOPIC SENTENCE         Last Sunday for me was a very busy day.

SUPPORTING IDEAS   

1 woke up at 6am, had guests

2 made breakfast for everybody- eggs, toast, coffee

3 took bus downtown- shopping, Art Gallery, Aquarium, Seawall

4 went to a Italian restaurant for dinner at 8- pizza, pasta, Ceasar Salad, red wine

5 back home, watched a scary movie together

 

CONCLUDING SENTENCE – final sentence, ends the paragraph

I had a really good day with my guests.

Then we went to the Art Gallery and walked around the Seawall. At 8, we went to an Italian restaurant for dinner. We had pizza and pasta. Then we went home and  watched a movie together. We had a fun day together.

74 words- a bit short, but ok

 

This week, we will start to learn about narrative writing. We will write a paragraph to pass in maybe Thursday.
