Overview of the 12 verb tenses in English:

We don’t need all of them.

 

Most important to know:

-Simple present- habit, usual activity, state

I go to school everyday.

I eat dinner at 3.

She drinks tea.

He is very tall.

Shira lives in Victoria.

 

-Simple past- one event in the past, finished

I walked my dog last night.

I ate dinner last night.

I went to night school yesterday.

I went to work yesterday afternoon.

 

-Simple future- one event to come in the future ‘will’ ‘am going to’

He will drive her to swimming practice tonight.

She is going to watch a movie.

I will cook dinner and then go for a run.

I will go to Superstore around 7.

I am going to a restaurant tonight.

I’m going to go to a party tonight.

 

-Present progressive  ‘ing’- happening right now

continuous / progressive ‘ing’ verb

We are learning English right now.

I am standng up.

You are writing notes.

I am sitting on the chair.

The teacher is talking.

 

She is listening to him.

Dora is listening to the radio.

We are having an English lesson.

I am thinking about my supper.

I am looking at the board.

 

-Past progressive – happening in the past, usually interrupted

He was watching a movie when the doorbell rang.

 

 

He watched a movie last night.

He was watching a movie, and the phone rang.

 

I was studying English when my friend called me.

My son was playing piano when the doorbell rang.

I was cooking in the kitchen when my daughter went out.

I was daydreaming when my boss called my name.

 

 

My daughter went to the eye specialist yesterday. simple past

My daughter was going to the eye specialist yesterday when she remembered that the appointment was next week. past progressive

 

 

-Future progressive- not used often

I will be driving to Surrey at 6 pm.

I wake up at 5:15 every day. I watch one hour of TV every night. You walk your dog for one hour between 4 and 5 every evening. I bring my dog, Butter, to school every Friday.

He is 34 years old.

 

-         fact, truth

The Prime Minister lives in Ottawa.

Victoria is the capital of BC.

    Simple Present Tense and Frequency Adverbs

 

adverb- modifies a verb

              -usually, ends with ‘ly’

quickly, slowly, easily, quietly,

well

 

frequency adverbs- how often- never, rarely, seldom, sometimes, often, usually, always

 

1.    I never drink coffee before I go to bed.

I always have a coffee before I take a nap.

2.    She always helps her mother with the housework.

housework- chores

homework- schoolwork

3.    Her husband never does the laundry.

4.    They usually take the bus to school.

I usually drive my car to school.

ride a bus/bicycle

I usually go to school by bus/car/bicycle.

I usually walk to school. I usually go to school on foot.

We explored downtown Vancouver on foot.

I have space/room for three kids. I can drive three kids.

5.    We seldom eat/have/go out for dinner in a restaurant.
