Eng11/12 Notes about grabbers

1.Rhetorical Question (a question that does not require an answer)
Does persistence result in success?

2.Quotations as Grabber:

Persistence and success
Colin Powell, former  White House Chief of Staff, once said “Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty, and persistence.” These words ring true for the intrepid protagonist, in Richard Bach’s short story, Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

3.  Use an anecdote: brief story that has a lesson or a point to it.

Thomas Edison failed at inventing the light bulb 1000 times. He said that he didn’t fail 1000 times, but found 1000 ways NOT to make a lightbulb. Similarly, in Richard Bach’s JLS, the protagonist embodies Edison-like persistence, and is ultimately successful. Indeed, the JLS’s persistence led him to ultimate success.

4’S of thesis statement writing:

1)     singular (is it about one main idea)
2)     Specific
3)    Significant
4)    Supportable

JLS’s feather were cool

The story is about persistence (too broad/too general )

The story is about how when you try to fly high in the sky and you fail, and you try again and then you get better that is success. (too specific)
