EF2/3 adverb clauses


when- state of being
“I was cooking supper when the phone rang.”
“When I was 12, I lived in my grandmother’s house.”
“When I was a child, I learned how to sew.”

while- longer activity
“I was cooking supper while the phone rang.”
“I was cooking supper while my daughter was reading a book.”
“I was cooking supper while my son watched TV.”

before
“He came home before she did.”
“I finished the test before the class was over.”
“I finished the test before 12:35.” –NOT ADVERB CLAUSE

after
“The kids went to bed after supper.”-NOT ADVERB CLAUSE
“The kids went to bed after they had supper.”

because
“You can do it because you are a hardworking learner.”

if
“It would be wonderful if you could do that.”

since – two meanings- TIME, BECAUSE
“He will have a nap since (because) he feels tired.”
“He has lived in Vancouver since 1992.”-NOT ADVERB CLAUSE
“He has lived in Vancouver since he moved here in 1992.”

although/ though/ even though
“He is going to the park although it is raining.”
“You keep studying English even though it is difficult sometimes.”

unless
I will go to the park unless it rains.
if
I won’t go to the park if it rains.

unless
You can pass the class unless you don’t study.
if
You can pass the class if you study.

as___ as ___
My son can run as quickly as I can.
You are as smart as she is.
He works as hard as his sister does.
You speak English as well as I do.

until
I will wait until you get home.
You will practice the piano until you can play the song.
She will stand there until the bus comes.

till- casual, good for talking

where
I know where the store is.

wherever
You can sit wherever you want.
