Good morning.

Today’s agenda

1.   Overview of course

2.   Email protocols

3.   Homework

Tomorrow - Review of sentences

novel? possibly

distributing books to students – our school is still sorting out how we can get books to students

for now – via email and internet for material

My email is ahaley@vsb.bc.ca Al Haley

Class blog      haleyshec.blogspot.com

We use the blog and email a lot in this class.

My focus:

Language: stress on writing paragraphs and essays. a big focus on sentences – full review

sentences – paragraph – essay

Literature: short stories, novel, poetry and drama.

Non-fiction – newspaper, magazine, essays

7-8 Quizzes – short (15-20m), point of grammar, 6 sentences- Worth 3 pts each

7-8 Tests – longer (40-45m), paragraph (at least 150w, 150-200w) about a topic we have been discussing – Worth 7pts each

2-3 Essays – longest form (1 ½ hr), multiparagraph writing (at least 300 w) about a topic we have been discussing – Worth 10 pts each

Average of all of the marks.

e.g.  8 quizzes X 3 pts = 24 pts

         7 tests X 7pts = 49 pts

         2 essays X 10pts = 20pts

93 pts – percentage based on that

80/93 – 86%

60/93 – 62.5% 63

Pass mark in BC is 50%.

ADVICE #1 – if you get below 65%, don’t try the next class

All quizzes and tests will be done via email.

You will write your test and email it to me as an attachment within the set time.

I will mark it using MSWord and send it back to you as an attachment.

There are many word processor programs. I have to use MSWord because that is my school gave me.

We are going to try that today for homework. Usually, most people can do it just fine, but there are always some snags that we will have to work out.

My preferred file format is an MSWord .doc or .rft

inviting me to edit a Googledoc doesn’t work.

Pdf won’t work because I can’t edit them.

If you send me a document that I can’t edit, then I will read and put a mark on it. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to give you any feedback on the writing.

If you didn’t receive the email, let me know.

EXAMPLE:

Test- paragraph (150-200w)

“Describe the symbols used by the pigs to show that they are on control of the farm.”

Email to me as an attachment by 12:35.

We don’t stay on Zoom during tests.

Plagiarism – copying from the internet or a book and pass it in for marks

The milk and apples the pigs claim for themselves shortly after the rebellion represent riches and wealth, to which the pigs feel a special sense of entitlement. The claim on these extra foodstuffs is the first of many special privileges the pigs will claim at the other animals' expense.

This is copied. This is plagiarized.

Joe. This is plagiarized.

Bad news:

0/10

Write a letter for his school file.

If he does it again, he’s out of my class.

Good news:

I will you how to borrow words and text using quotation marks.

I don’t want anyone to get into trouble. I will show how to stay out of trouble.

Email protocols:

4.   Send the quiz or test as an attachment. I will return it as an attachment.

HOMEWORK:
