Good morning everyone. We
will get started at 8:30.
Every morning at 8:15 I will
post the link to our Zoom class. The link will change every day.
You can find the link on my
class blog: haleyshec.blogspot.com
My name is Al Haley. I will
be your teacher for English 10 & English 11.
Our class will be held on
Zoom, everyday from 8:30- approximately 9:30. Then I will give you some
homework to do.
The normal class schedule is
8:30-10:45, but we shorten the classes during Covid19. All schools are doing
this.
When we are in class, I ask
everyone to mute their microphone unless you want to talk. That will the class
easier to understand with less noise.
Feel free to talk as much as
you want. Just unmute your mic when you want to talk.
This class is a spilt class –
Literary Studies 11, Composition 10, Literary Studies 10.
English 10 & 11 put together.
I will mark your mark at
either an English 10 level or an English 11 level.
English 10 – next class Eng
11
English 11 – next class Eng
12
Most of the students Eng 11-
I will focus on Eng 11 level.
That will benefit the Eng 10 students.
Our class will run Monday to
Friday, September 8 – November 6 (First Quarter)
Second quarter - Nov- Jan
Third quarter Feb-Apr
Fourth quarter Apr-Jun
Summer (likely, but not guaranteed)
I have a limit of 30
students. If there is room, I can take walk-ins. I will know in the next day or
so. Please stay in class for now if you are a walk-in.
If you want to talk, feel free
to unmute your mic and talk.
Also, you can type in the Chat
box.
Winnie, is your speaker muted?
Is the volume turned down?
Usually it takes a little
while for everyone to sort out their computer sound and camera.
Winnie, just keep working on
it. I can’t fix it from here.
The class can hear me, so it
is working on my end.
Chat box – we use it a lot
especially when we are working on sentences
Write examples in the chat
box; we share them
At the end of each class, I
will post all of this on my blog. You can find it there.

My blog is public with no
password. Use it as much as you like. Many former students still use the blog
as a resource. Forever.
You can search for specific
topics.
Speaking is challenge over
Zoom. I would like to try using small chat groups. Maybe a presentation.
I encourage to speak in class
if they want the practice. Speaking English is very important for you.
Not comfortable speaking –
shy, naturally-quiet, not confident in their English skills, reticent,
taciturn,
- lots of reasons why people may
not speak
However, you should push
yourself to speak in English. It is an extremely important ability to have.
Are you going to live in
Canada? Yes- You don’t want to live in Canada and not be able to speak well.
not fun for you – can’t talk
to people, can’t talk on the telephone, can’t understand what people are saying
You can have better.
SECRET – Practice. Daily practice.
For example, I play music. I
practice every day. It’s important to me to be a good musician.
What is important to you? Do
you practice it every day?
- sports - basketball,
soccer, badminton, pingpong
- health – yoga, taichi, stretching
- health – drink water (2-3 litres),
good food
- good person – kindness, generous,
volunteer
Is English important to you? –
in your heart!! really
If not, then you won’t practice.
If it is, then PRACTICE every
day.
- schedule – writing, speaking,
reading, listening
This class is just one opportunity
to learn some English. I will teach you a lot about writing and reading in
English.
There are many opportunities
outside of class for you to improve your English. Find opportunities and take
them. Don’t wait.
With Zoom, we lose the
face-to-face communication. We don’t have the physical feedback of sitting in
the same room.
We will meet tomorrow and
start with our school work.
Today was an introduction.
Just saying hello.
Questions? Concerns?
I’ll talk about the course in
detail tomorrow.
The good news is we have a
full class. We will have a good time and learn a lot.
Email your advisor about
classes if you want to register. The advisors are swamped with emails. It might
take a few days to get back to you.
See you tomorrow at 8:30.
Check the blog at 8:15 for the link.
