English Mix! Verb tenses

verb tenses-
review of 12 verb tenses
We will pick the most important ones because some of the verb tenses are not that commonly used.

Verb tenses

SIMPLE TENSES
simple present- daily life, everyday, habits, fact
I drink coffee. She takes a shower at 7:30 in the morning. 2 plus 2 is 4. Maria lives in Burnaby.
COMMON ERROR: Joe walk to school.
subject verb agreement - Joe walks to school.
He/she/it/Your mother walks to school.
They/we/you/I walk to school.
#1 mistake that you will make.

PROGRESSIVE/CONTINUOUS TENSES

Present progressive
She is driving in the snow.
We are watching a movie.
COMMON ERROR
We watching a movie.
We are studying English right now.
We are talking about the present progressive tense.
We are thinking about how strange it is to write this down.
We are having a good time.
My dog is sleeping on my son's bed.
Your kids are probably eating lunch with their friends right now.
You might be thinking that this class is too easy for you.

PAST PROGRESSIVE
I was shoveling the sidewalk this morning.
I shoveled the sidewalk this morning.

was shoveling the sidewalk this morning, and then something happened.
was shoveling the sidewalk this morning, and a car slid down the street sideways.
was shoveling the sidewalk this morning while my family watched me from the window.

Maria watched a scary movie last night.
Maria was watching a scary movie last night, and a ghost sat down beside her.

past progressive - something else happened
Joe was talking to his brother last night, and his brother told him let it slip that he was adopted.
let it slip - said something you shouldn't have

Future progressive
She will be going to UBC next year.
She will go to UBC next year.
She will be driving to Surrey later. 
She'll drive to Surrey later.

PERFECT TENSES
present perfect
I have been in Canada since 2015.
I have lived in Canada since November.
**use a time indicator with present perfect
have lived in Canada since last year.
have lived in Canada for almost 20 years.
I have been lived in Canada for 10 years. XXX
Joe has played piano since he was four years old. 
since he was four years old - adverb clause
Mary has worked at Apple since 2007.

PAST PERFECT
Maria had lived in Taiwan for 10 years. UNUSUAL
SUBSITUTE simple past
Maria lived in Taiwan for 10 years. 

FUTURE PERFECT

Maria will have worked at Apple for 20 years by the time she retires. UNUSUAL - TOO COMPLICATED


PERFECT PROGRESSIVE
present perfect progressive
Maria has been living in Vancouver for ten years.
Maria has lived in Vancouver for ten years.
VERY SIMILAR
'ing' sounds something is keeping going, active, energetic

Mike has played soccer since he was a kid.
Mike has been playing soccer since he was a kid.
Mike has playing soccer since he was a kid. XXX

PAST PERFECT PROGRESSIVE
Forget it!!
Sarah had been working for the whole day.
SUBSTITUTE PAST PROGRESSIVE
Sarah was working for the whole day.

FUTURE PERFECT PROGRESSIVE
Forget about it!
Michele will have been living in Vancouver for 25 years. UNUSUAL, NOBODY SAYS THAT
SUBSTITUTE future progressive
Michele will be living in Vancouver for 25 years. 


7 of 12 are important. The rest we can ignore.
