Eng 11 Literary Terms

reading fiction - terms that we need to know
basic terms:
setting
character

conflict

start reading a work of fiction - get our bearings, thinking about these terms

basic PLOT- story, what happens

PLOTLINE




-any novel, movie, short story, work of fiction

Exposition- setting, major characters
Rising action - developing conflict, getting into the story
Climax - most gripping part of the text, work of fiction, on the edge of your seat
Falling action - story is starting to relax, main events are over, coming back down
Denouement - final ending, curtain come down, close the book

music - Beethoven symphony, like a story is being told

SETTING - time and place of a work of fiction
also culture/society, psychology, finances economics , religion


CHARACTER - person, animal, thing
a. dynamic - outlook, perspective, inner life          
                     changes
b. static - stays the same
c. round - fully described, fully realized
d. flat
e.f. stereotype/stock character
g. major - essential to the plot, usually be round
h. minor - extra, provide colour, background, supporting, not essential
movies- extras, background actors
i. protagonist - "pro" positive
proactive, prohibition, professional, pro-choice, proposal - good character, the character that we most care about
j. antagonist - "anti" against
antibody, antibiotic, antiracism, antibullying
- bad character, the character that we most hate, don't want them to succeed

when the main character is a bad person, when the protagonist is evil - "antihero" Hannibal, The Joker, John Doe in Seven

Conflict - struggle, fight, friction between two things or people

person vs technology - internet addiction, computer games, identity theft, internet scams, clone credit card, cyberbullying, GMO - genetically modified organism - animals, food, people
GM foods - tomato, corn, soy

person vs supernatural - ghosts, magical creatures, evil, spirits, zombies, shadow people, sleep paralysis, talking in their sleep, sleepwalking
