First Names Help Chinese-Canadian Children Fit Right In.

English First name and Chinese middle name:
Middle name keep cultural identity in tact
Chloe’s middle name in Phuong = Phoenix  — would the name phoenix work as a first name?
Long means Dragon —may not work as a first name?
English names were chosen to fit in (more approachable…more westernized)
Middle names have a connection to their home culture/origins/family—identity
Choosing an english name is proof that you are assimilating to the “dominant” culture
My Name is Margaret
     Name is identity
amalgamation of everything that came before
Miss Glory — she could have been like Margaret
Her name used to be Hallelujah
She has come to accept and adopt her identity —“Glory”
     Internalized “slave” mentality
When Margaret smashes dishes, Miss Glory says “we/our” not “your”
Miss Glory has accepted a new identity with accepting her new name
Margaret rejects a new identity by rejecting the name “mary”
Margaret is a connection to  her family/history/origin—identity
     Retaining one’s sense of self
     Mary=less than human—slave identity
Margaret represents = self actualization/a sense of identity
Mrs. Cullinan values her dishes more than Margaret
Virginia dishes —Cullinan’s family is from Virginia —Slave owners in Virginia
Miss Glory is hurt by Miss Cullinan’s Broken dishes from Virginia
     Dishes breaking
     Maya/Margaret/Mary
Maya and Margaret is her persona-sister/daughter/granddaughter/family—sense of being human
     Mary=oppressed/less than human/no respect

Cultural Identity Through my Name(s)

Call me “Jane” —embarrassed by Korean Name
     Adopted name and found belonging
     gives up her Korean culture
     Assimilates into American culture
willing to sacrifice Korean culture to fit in
after the exchange she gains sense of Korean culture
Leans how to live in two cultures
Substitute teacher mangles her name …she corrects him “my name is Dongeun”
She reclaims her identity —both American and Korean

You can’t know who you are unless you know where you’ve been.

Eng11/12 Notes about grabbers

1.Rhetorical Question (a question that does not require an answer)
Does persistence result in success?

2.Quotations as Grabber:

Persistence and success
Colin Powell, former  White House Chief of Staff, once said “Success is the result of perfection, hard work, learning from failure, loyalty, and persistence.” These words ring true for the intrepid protagonist, in Richard Bach’s short story, Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

3.  Use an anecdote: brief story that has a lesson or a point to it.

Thomas Edison failed at inventing the light bulb 1000 times. He said that he didn’t fail 1000 times, but found 1000 ways NOT to make a lightbulb. Similarly, in Richard Bach’s JLS, the protagonist embodies Edison-like persistence, and is ultimately successful. Indeed, the JLS’s persistence led him to ultimate success.

Living vs Existing
Loren Eiseley Passage
Above all, some of them, a mere handful in any generation perhaps, loved – they loved the animals around them, the song of the wind, the soft voices of women. On the flat surfaces of cave walls the three dimensions of the outside world took animal shape and form. Here — not with the ax, not with the bow — man fumbled at the door of his true kingdom. Here, hidden in times of trouble behind silent brows, against the man with the flint, waited St. Francis of the birds — the lovers, the men who are still forced to walk warily among their kind.

Maya Angelou:

Media pressure on us to conform
—tap into our fears of not belonging:
Money does not buy happiness (rich people)

Brand new house and phone —will it make you happy?
