Five-paragraph essays – basic style, baking a simple cake You can learn other styles as you become more comfortable with essays.

five short paragraphs (300-400 words)

Introductory paragraph
- Grabber/Hook
- Thesis statement (same role as a Topic Sentence in a paragraph)
- Preview of the three points (3 points- 2 is not enough, 4 is too many)

Body paragraphs, three body paragraphs because there are three points
-1. short paragraph about point #1
-2. short paragraph about point #2
-3. short paragraph about point #3

Concluding paragraph
-restate the Thesis Statement
-restate the three points
-end with a Clincher (like a Grabber/Hook, but at the end)

Is Canada a good place to live?
Yes/No
Two different approaches:
PLAN
yes – 1.safe-politically, stable, law and order, little violence, no war
2.clean-water, air, streets, hygiene
3.opportunity-school, educational, politically, business, equal opportunity

no – 1.weather, climate – cold, long winters, rainy, grey, little sun
2.expensive- tax, goods and services, education
3.challenges – finding good job, racism, language, culture, law

When you write the essay, you write sentences. Don’t number 1. 2. 3.
Always real sentences.

There won’t be any quotations for this essay because we are not writing about a story.
In English 10,11,12 you will write essays with quotations.
For this first essay, we will keep it simple. I don’t want to ask you to write your first essay and include quoted work. It will be too much to do for the first time.

Example topic:
Do you agree that marijuana should be legal in Canada?
Pets are good for children. Yes/No
Should college be free for all citizens?
Should medical care be free for all citizens?
