Noun Clauses

 

Two pools of words to choose from for noun clauses:

A.   VERBS

-cognition- think, feel, believe, know, understand, forget, remember, recall, realize, recognize, worry, regret, wonder, find, see, hear

-communicating- say, yell, whisper, shout, scream, suggest, predict, speak, advise, murmur, mutter, stutter, mention

 

B.    We most often connect these verbs with these words: that, what, why, how, who, where, which (noun cl and adj cl)

 

Exercise 1:

Complete the sentences with appropriate noun clauses. Write your solutions on your own paper.

1.           I didn’t know why she was screaming.

I didn’t know why she was not doing well.

I didn’t know where she lives/d.

The teacher explained that/how/why the answer is/was correct.

The teacher explained what the main point of the story is.

What is the main point of the story? SIMPLE- Interrogative

COMMON ERROR: Don’t use a interrogative simple sentence as a noun clause.

The teacher explained why it is so important to do homework.

Why is it so important to do homework?

 

QUESTION: What time is it?

NOUN CLAUSE Do you know what time is it is?

 

What is your name?

I don’t know what your name is.

IDIOM ADJ or not

We don’t know if it will rain or not.

I’m not sure what will happen in the future.

I’m not sure if I have a good balance in my account.

I’m not sure where she will go for/on her next trip.

 

I’m not sure if your choice is right. I’m not sure if we’re doing the right thing.

Tell me why you are so happy/upset/nervous/angry/sad/weepy.

14.                       What kind of car does Jim have?  I can’t remember what kind of car Jim has.

15.                       How old are their children?  I can’t remember how old their children are.

16.                       Where can I catch the bus?  Could you please tell me where I can catch the bus?

17.                       Who did Sara invite?  I don’t know who Sara invited/will invite.

18.                       How long has Ted been living here?  Do you know how long Ted has been living here?

19.                       What time is Flight 677 supposed to arrive?  Can you tell

          me what time Flight 667 is supposed to arrive/land.
