Present progressive verb tense-

 

Review of simple verb tenses:

 

-Simple present- habitual action, everyday, usual

She/He/It/Junko goes to school by bus at 8am.”

We/I/They/You go to school by bus at 8am.”

 

-Simple past – one event finished

She/He/It/Junko/We/I/They/You went to school by bus at 8am.”

 

-Simple future- one event to come “will” “am going to”

She/He/It/Junko/We/I/They/You will go to school by bus at 8am.”

 

 

Next verb tense:

Present progressive/present continuous  ‘ing’

 

Either way is OK – present progressive OR present continuous

 

aux verb ‘to be’ + ‘ing’ verb

 

aux verb ‘to be’

am   is   are

 

Examples:

He is running down the sidewalk.  aux verb ‘is’   ing ‘running’

She is talking on the phone to her sister.

I am studying French at school.

You are learning English at SHEC.

 

** need two words in the verb “is going” “are walking” “am talking”

COMPARING SIMPLE PRESENT AND PRESENT PROGRESSIVE

Mei studies English. simple present- always

Mei is studying English. present progressive- active right now

 

Junko studies at VCC. usually

Junko is studying at VCC. right now

 

I am studying French.

He is studying French.

They are studying French.

We are studying French.

 

I study karate. usually

I’m studying karate. right now

I’m study karate.

I studying karate.

 

“Present Progressive”
