SUBJECT LINE: Name, Class, Time, Replacement Test

Talking vs writing. Which one is more important?

Talking- most of our English usage will be oral

Speaking and listening – most of the time, 90%?

Writing – much less

Speaking and Listening class- ask your advisor.

The focus of this class has been writing, school writing, academic writing.

Being patient with our learning. Learning new things takes a long time. Progress is not linear. Progress does not happen in a straight line.

Analogy – losing weight

Tuesday – 190lbs, eat well, exercise

Wednesday- 189lbs, eat well, exercise

Thursday- 195lbs!!! How is it possible?

Friday – 192lbs!!!

No linear progress.

Same with language, same with music, same with any skill.

We have to think about it in a longer term.

e.g. lose weight

January 1- 190lbs, eat right, exercise

January 2- weight is not important, keep eating right, keep exercising

March 1- after some time, two months- weight will be meaningful

195lbs- not working, have to make some dietary or exercise changes

180lbs – working, keep doing it

Learning English –

e.g. Learn adjective clause, do a quiz two days later

do poorly in the quiz 1/6- not important

Keep reviewing the work, keep practicing the adjective clauses

Where will you be in three months? How will your adjective clause usage have improved by then?

It is very important to keep going, especially for the people who are having a hard time with the sentence writing.

You can do it! You have to keep going.

2-3 months is decent amount of time to see some progress. If there is little progress by March, then you have to make some changes.
