EF2/3 Advocacy letters

Writing Advocacy Letters

In Canada, you are allowed to write to elected officials and advocate for causes that affect you.  It is their job to represent you as a voter and as a resident.  There are a million ways to write an advocacy letter.  However, all advocacy letters should include the following parts:

1.State what you want the person to do
2.Explain why the person should take these actions
3.Engage the reader in a personal way
4.Request follow up

Dear (Contact Person):

I want to continue to study at adult education in Vancouver. I heard that the news that all of the schools will be closed except for South Hill. I want you to keep the education schools open for many people who want to study and graduate.

Thousands of adults study in adult education centres in Vancouver. They study English,
math, biology, chemistry, social studies, etc. Some of the students study so they can go to university or college. Some of the students study so they can get a better job. That is really important for our lives, for the future of our kids, and for our society.

I think that education is the key to success in life. Without a high school education, it is very difficult to get a good job and make good money. Most people need a college diploma or a university degree to get a good job. Adult education helps lost of people get ready for jobs or post-secondary education.
If many people have opportunities to go to school, Canada will benefit. Our future as a country will be better. Not only kids but also adults should have a chance to get better education.
If the government pays for high school courses for adults, they can get better jobs when they finish. When people get better jobs, they pay more tax. They will pay the society back very quickly. Adult education is a good investment for everybody.

Also, education helps lift people out of poverty. Most poor people in BC are women. many single mothers raising children on their own are poor. Adult education can help them, and help their families.

Request follow-up- Ask that the elected official to get back to you about this problem.
