Week 5

We have already finished four weeks of our course.

It is almost midterm.

 

Registration for February quarter(Quarter 3, Feb-Apr) will being Monday, January 5th.

 

Next week, I will give you your recommendation for what course you should take in Quarter 3. We have a quick discussion at my desk.

Your recommendation will based on your quizzes, tests, and spoken work.

Also, you will get your first spoken mark out of 10. Your spoken mark comes from your speaking in class.

In order to move on to the next higher level, you must have a passing average.

You must be Proficient in the PLOs that we have been working on.

WRITING C1        “communicate meaning by using conventions of

writing”

“simple, compound, and complex sentences”

“past, present, and future tenses, including simple, progressive, and present perfect”

 

 These skills are what the teacher is looking for.

 

You can ask yourself:   How has my writing been? How have the quizzes

been? How have the tests been?

How has my speaking been? Have I been talking in class? Have I been communicating in English in a meaningful way in class?

 

Every class you have opportunities to speak and write. Hopefully, you are taking those opportunities.

 

There are no attendance points. If you are late or absent a lot, you will have to talk with an advisor.

Topic sentence-

gives the main idea of the paragraph

 

Essay-thesis statement

topic sentence    -addressed the writing prompt

                               -puts your writing on topic

-usually the first sentence (sometimes a grabber/hook will precede it)

                               -opens a door for ideas

left-handed – injured more often than right handed-people

 

-ambidextrous(adj)- can use both hands equally

 

-cross-dominated- use one hand for one activity, the other hand for a different activity

 

 

Opinion paragraph

Persuasive writing

 

opinion(n)- your idea, perspective- your view of a topic, point-of-view, what you think

 

WF- word form

persuasive(adj)   She is a very persuasive person. She can talk people into anything.

A salesperson has to be persuasive.

IDIOM         She can talk the hind leg off a dog.

She could sell ice to Eskimos Inuit.

 

NEGATIVE manipulate(v)

manipulative(adj)   My friend, Sarah, is emotionally manipulative.

manipulation(n)  

emotionally manipulative, emotional blackmail-

e.g. the silent treatment, the cold shoulder

manipulative- persuasive in a negative way, tricking people

 

 

persuade(v)         The little kid persuaded his parents to buy him a toy.

negotiate(v)- come to terms, find a middle-ground, common ground

compromise(v,n)          They compromised on the new car.

 

persuasion(n)   Students are very good at persuasion about marks.

 

debate(n,v)- organized discussions, argument

 

argument- sounds negative, can be positive

discussion- sounds positive

IDIOM have a word    Can I have a word with you?

EVERYDAY How are you? How are you doing? What’s new. How are things?

 

 

 

procrastinate(v) to wait, to waste time when you have work to do

 

positive meaning – express your opinion clearly, give reasons why you think the way you do

 

Opinion – usually a controversial topic- many strong opinions, debatable

e.g Trump is a very controversial person.

 

Pro or con

 

e.g. Should marijuana be legal in Canada?

-strong emotional opinions, gut feeling: strong YES or strong NO 

-less common MAYBE, undecided

 

 

 

 

OPINION

YES – should be legal-

give some good reasons:

-your personal choose, free country

-can be helpful for anxiety, depression

-medical benefits- cancer, pain relief, glaucoma

-business opportunities

-tax money to government

-stop illegal trafficking

-reduce organized crime

-quality control is regulated

-reduced police and court involvement

 

Choose 3-4,5 best reasons.
