Reading Strategies

Some people find reading for school to be challenging. They may not read much in their personal life. It seems like video is replacing books for information delivery and entertainment.

In school, you will have to read large amounts of content daily. In college and university you will be reading and processing large amounts, dozens and dozens of pages a day.

Personally, I strive to be a daily reader.

For school, I read a book or a text at least twice. (3-4 times)

FIRST READING – armchair reading

- relaxing chair, cup of tea

                               - quiet place, earplugs, helps with concentration

                               - Turn off the phone! – hurts your concentration

                               - minimize the distractions

*** multitasking is a lie-       You cannot do two activities that require brainpower at once. i.e. listening to music and studying at the same time

First reading – read for basics of the story: setting, characters, conflict, plot

SECOND READING- desk reading, school or work desk, with a pencil

**make notes as you read- You have to make notes on what you read.

- jot down key words and ideas as you read them, “quotations”

“glistened like glass”para1

I use a computer now, but I used to use pencil and paper.

You have to make notes because you will forget. If you don’t refresh the new information, it will be gone in three days.

-Keep your notes in a safe place. You can go back and refer to your notes many years later. The notes will jog your memory of what the content of the book was. You can use text notes or mind maps. Mind maps are visual representation of information.

Notetaking is a very powerful tool.

I don’t make notes on every book I read. I do keep notes of things that jump out at me while I am reading. I keep notes on my phone. To be honest, all of my notes are a big mess right now.

Our class blog is just a collection of notes from the daily class.

My school reading routine is first reading and second reading. Then I feel like I am ready for class. It takes time, but you get faster and better at it with practice.

ADVICE: First reading- armchair. Second reading- desk and pencil.

GOALSETTING FOR READING:

I am a person who sets goals for myself.

My personal daily goal for reading is 30 pages of a book.

One and a half weeks is about one book.

If you wish, your personal daily goal for reading could be 15 pages.

NOTE: If you are a person who does not usually read, a good to start reading is to pick up a book that is on a topic that you find interesting.

e.g. science, sports, fashion, architecture, movies, music, history, war, cooking, etc.

It is an enjoyable experience to read about a topic that you are interested in.

PERSONAL OPINION: If you watch Tiktok and Youtube videos all the time, your brain will turn to mashed potatoes.

Youtube is nice, but it is like eating baby food.

You must sink your teeth into a good book.

Go to VPL. Get a library.

Go to the Young Adult section – teenager books

Ask the librarian.
