write (v) I like to write poetry.

writing (v) She is writing a birthday card for Justin Trudeau.

written (adj) He is not confident with written English.

 

written (v) – past participle

 

Three forms a verb:

simple                   past             participle

eat                         ate               eaten

write                     wrote         written

take                       took            taken

drink                     drank          drunk

 

 

He eats a salad every day.

She ate a green salad yesterday.

She has eaten all of the salad that was in the fridge.

has eaten – present perfect, started in the past, continues to now

The salad was eaten by her. – passive voice

 

was eating – past progressive

I was eating my supper when the phone rang.

 

 

*participle – used for passive voice and perfect tenses

 

present perfect – very useful – started in the past, continues to now

live              lived            lived

I am living in South Vancouver.

I have lived in South Van since 2004. – present perfect

He has worked as a barber for two years.

She has enjoyed hiking for about five years.

Nichole has studied English since she was in high school.

I have been playing guitar since I was a young teenager.

Your daughter has swum competitively for five years.

Your daughter has swum competitively since she was a kid.

I have lived here for one year. present perfect

 

perfect- doesn’t mean ‘perfect’, great, wonderful

 

Write a few examples of present perfect sentences on your own.

I have registered in EF4 for next term.

She has studied violin since she was six years old.

He has driven a truck for five years.
