Causative verbs: one verb that makes another action happen
help, allow, invite, require, motivate, get, convince,
hire, assist, encourage, permit, employ, force, compel, tell, ask
"help" causes "to play" to happencausative - causes something to happen
The boss allows the employee to work at home.
'allow' causes 'to work'
Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) requires me to send in a bunch of documents.
motivate - motive (n) reason - give them a reason to do something
I motivate my son to read for 15 minutes everyday.
motivate - encourage - give somebody courage
She gets her husband to pick up some groceries.
ask strongly - almost force
convince - persuade, to talk someone into something
Jon convinced his friends to go out for a dinner together.
My son convinced me to buy him a fishing rod.
Joe hired a company to mow his lawn every week.
permit (v) permit (n) - a piece of paper
permission (n)
She told her son to put a hat on since it was raining.
He told himself to get to sleep early.
She got to sleep quickly. She fell asleep quickly.
get/go to sleep - fall asleep
got/went to sleep - fell asleep
Sarah told her sister to practice English.
I asked my older daughter to do me a favour.
I asked my older daughter to give me a hand.
She asked her mother to stop "showing off".
The mother didn't help her daughter to win at chess anymore.
They didn't hire me to be the new manager.
Another way to do other causative verbs:
help, have, make, let
'help' is special and can be used both ways
I help my son do his homework.
I help my son to do his homework.
have
I had him paint the house.
I got him to paint the house.
Could I get you to doublespace, please?

She made her five-year-old son take a bath.
force - very strong
She forced her son to take a bath.
let - allow
She let her daughter go to the party.
She allowed her daughter to go to the party.
