five-paragraph essay

How to Pass a Course at the Top of the Class

Written by Barbara Liu

I have been studying in school since I was a four-year-old kid.  If you ask me how to pass a course at the top of the class, I would say you have asked the right person.  You have to switch position with your teacher.  How would you like your student to be?  If you get that right, you are halfway through passing your course.  Teachers like to see good attendance, homework finished on time, and especially, teachers love students who answer questions in class.

All teachers like to see their students have good attendance.  So, you must never miss a class or leave early.  You should always be on time, sitting in the front row with your books laid out tidily.  If you must miss a class, be sure to tell the teacher beforehand and ask your study buddy to pick up an extra copy of the homework for you.

If there is any homework, make sure you finish it.  It is not necessary that you have done it all correctly; mainly, the teacher wants to see that you tried.  But it would be better if you did it all perfectly.  When your teacher asks if you read or did your homework, you could say loudly that you did.  This will give a very good impression to your teacher.  The teacher will know that you are trying very hard. -the teacher’s pet-

My final advice will be very easy: always ask questions and answer your teacher’s questions.  Let her hear your voice.  Let her know you are paying attention.  You shouldn’t yell out at every opportunity; just make sure you pay attention and answer a few questions each class.  If your teacher hears you speaking out, she will know you care about the coursework and are eager to improve in this subject area.  Plus, if you do try to ask and answer questions in class, you will realize that your knowledge of the material increases.

- absent while present-

All of the above So, in a nutshell, make sure you do your homework, attend class, and participate a little bit. These are not difficult to do, but they can definitely help you to pass.  For the last thirty years, they have been working for me.  So, good luck on your next class. I hope you will reach your goal of getting great academic success and make your parents proud.

-does not restate the three points: attendance, homework, participation- missed opportunity

I have been teaching precise grammar and punctuation good for school and work.

I have been teaching ,SOBA in compound sentences.

Phrasal Verbs

Phrasal verbs are two or three-word verbs usually consisting of a verb plus a preposition or two.

verb + preposition

Phrasal verbs are the heart of English. The more you know phrasal verbs, the more natural youe spoken and written English will sound.

Adding prepositions to the verb can completely change the meaning of the verb.  For example, “speak to” and “speak for” have very different meanings.  So too do “look up to” and “look down on”.  The meanings of phrasal verbs are idiomatic, which means their meaning is in the culture not in the dictionary.

look (v)

look + prep

look at

look after

look up

look up to – respect

talk to

talk with

talk over

talk for

talk about

Here are some URLs for webpages that have lists of hundreds of phrasal verbs.  You probably know many of them already:

-200 phrasal verbs

http://www.englishclub.com/vocabulary/phrasal-verbs-list.htm

-Several hundred phrasal verbs

https://www.learn-english-today.com/phrasal-verbs/phrasal-verb-list.html

-500 phrasal verbs

https://www.espressoenglish.net/learn-500-phrasal-verbs-the-most-natural-way/

Many of these you will know already. There are hundreds more to learn. Don’t feel overwhelmed- just learn a few new ones each day. Use them in your talking and writing.

Building up your familiarity with phrasal verbs will help your English sound natural and authentic.

It is worth the time that put into it.

e.g.

I am going to Surrey.  ok, sounds fine

I am heading for Surrey. ten times as natural sounding, really authentic

These are not difficult; there are just a lot of them. Good news: you know a lot of them already.

Use them! Start using them!

Passive and active vocabulary-

We always can understand more than we can say.

Our passive vocabulary can be quite large.

Our active vocabulary is much smaller. Our challenge is to make it grow.

Verb with infinitive and gerunds:

like, love, hate, can’t stand, begin, continue

like + infinitive OR gerund

like to ski OR like skiing

Marie likes to ski. OR Maria likes skiing.

The dog began to whine as soon as he saw the cat.

The dog began whining as soon as he saw the cat.

Joe hates washing the dishes.

Joe hates to wash the dishes.

Will you continue to take classes at SHEC?

Will you continue taking classes at SHEC?

The meaning is the same. I can’t detect a difference in meaning.

They are interchangable for most practical purposes.

TOPIC:Beauty

MY TAKE ON THE TOPIC:

- girls- unrealistic expecations, internet, social media

In the past few years, social media has created a culture of unrealistic standards of beauty for women. For many young girls who are exposed to these images, this has caused enermous anxiety with their perceptions of themselves and their self-worth.

Body paragraphs – three reasons

For Eng 12, the teacher give you a broad topic.

Love, Music, Justice, The Imprtance of Friendship

In EF6, I will give you a very specific topic. You will not have to do as much work narrowing it down. I narrowed it down for you.

For example:

1.    Food How can eat healthily in these busy times?

2.    Noise pollution

3.    Living in the City Would you prefer to live in a city or in the country?

Is it better to raise kids in the city or in the country?

4.    Beauty Is it better to beautiful on the outside or on the inside?

5.    A Happy Life The Secrets of a Happy Life

What are the secrets of a happy life?

For practice, get some ideas together and write a TS for these topics.

Come up with three ideas that would be for the body paraagraphs.

You do not have to write the body paragraphs.

If you would like to try a full essay for practice, I would be happy to read it.

1.    How can eat healthily in these busy times?

2.    Would you prefer to live in a city or in the country?

3.    Is it better to raise kids in the city or in the country?

4.    Is it better to beautiful on the outside or on the inside?

5.    What are the secrets of a happy life?

*NOTE: The Bicycle essay is a good model of a simple, well-organized, straight forward essay. It is bit dull and boring, but it will get good marks.
